Here’s the solution: The law enforcement component is insufficient since its members are prone to bias and there are no safeguards in place to ensure that they treat residents fairly. The topic of systematic racism and inequality among law enforcement officials has been a source of concern. The public has complained to police officers about the mistreatment and treatment that individuals of color have received from them. When black people engage with police personnel, they are frequently abused. We’ve seen recordings of police officers mistreating persons of color during traffic stops and arrests. When a person of color is noticed by a police officer, they are automatically labeled as suspects, even if they haven’t done anything wrong. This is referred to as racial profiling by law enforcement. This leads to frisks and random police searches. According to surveys and data, individuals of color are arrested by police officers for small violations whereas white people are not punished for the same activities. J. G. Miller, J. G. Miller, J. G. Miller, J (1996). According to another study, black men are 2.5 times more likely than white men to be killed by police, with a 1 in 1000 chance of being slain by a police officer. Latino men were also 1.3 to 1.4 times more likely than white guys to be slain by police. The public has also been outspoken in its rejection of police officers’ excessive use of force. I’d propose regulations and legislation requiring the police department to share body camera footage of officers who use violence or excessive force while on the job. During misbehavior inquiries, I’d eliminate paid leave. I’d urge for police personnel to be retrained in citizen arrests, de-escalation techniques, and to be held personally liable for any harm they cause. The course is significant because it allows us to explore issues that impact the criminal justice system as well as solutions to improve it. Some of the advantages are that it allows us to debate topics that are taboo in normal public discourse and that it informs us about aspects of criminality that we are unaware of. A group of my students proposes that for-profit prisons be abolished (Silberman, C. E. (1978)). These jails function as modern-day slave labor camps, with inmates forced to undertake work for which they are not compensated. It would be difficult to abolish them due of politics. There would be a tremendous lobbying effort by jail owners in Congress to prevent such a law from being passed. classmates:
1-Cassidy: One aspect of the criminal justice system that I believe is lacking is the level of help provided to persons who are released from jails and prisons. If we could provide appropriate help for these individuals and give them a “step up” to get their lives back on track, I believe there would be less recidivism. We are not serving the individual if we continue to throw them in jail and hope they take a plea deal so we can move along swiftly. We must provide these individuals with the tools they need to succeed, or they will continue to drain our resources and clog up our court system rather than contributing to society. One beneficial outcome of this course, in my opinion, is the shift in policing. Many police departments appear to be heading in the direction of hiring well-rounded and competent professionals who can approach each case from an educated rather than a militarized standpoint. Overall, I believe the course provided useful information that is relevant to all of us, particularly in light of recent events involving police aggression. This, I believe, gives us an inside glimpse at the workings of the criminal justice system, giving us all suggestions on how to modify what we don’t perceive as being useful to society in the future. 2nd Jon: So, to begin our discussion board, I’d like to start with a statement from Martin Luther King Jr.: Law and order exist for the purpose of producing justice, and when they fail to do so, they become the dangerously built dams that impede the flow of social progress. Overall, I believe that there are numerous issues that might be resolved within the Justice System alone. If I were to pick just one thing to change, it would have to be the plan for providing acceptable confinement circumstances. Many municipal jails were unsanitary, hazardous, vermin-infested, and lacking facilities in which offenders could exercise or even get fresh air, according to this PDF titled Prisons in the United States of America. In other sections of the essay, it outlines how public prisons are overcrowded, and how the expansion of private corrections businesses is fueling spending (about 100,000 adults were incarcerated in 142 privately owned prisons and jails countrywide). I believe that eliminating the usage of solitary confinement as a disciplinary technique for detained people is one method to address this problem. It should also be prohibited for minors and anyone with mental, psychological, and/or physical health problems (Human rights Watch: Prison conditions in the United States).
If there is one wonderful thing that we have instilled in our justice system here in the United States, I believe it is the principle that every individual must be presumed innocent until proven guilty. This empirical method, in my opinion, has worked fairly effectively up to this point. I am well aware that the vast majority of criminal trials end in guilty convictions. My concluding comments on the class were that it is quite instructive, and you truly come to realize that this major forces you to see all of the gray regions in between. 3- Kathryn: One aspect of the criminal justice system that I believe is insufficient is how it works in favor of those who have power and privilege. What I mean is that someone with a higher socioeconomic position can afford greater resources than the ordinary defendant, which opens up opportunities like hiring better counsel, being able to post bail, and other monetary perks. This bias against particular people is unfair, and it brings additional injustices to light, such as racial profiling and disproportionately harsh penalties for specific people. “Policies typically have a particularly devastating impact on children, racial minorities, or low-income communities accused of or harmed by crime,” according to an article titled Criminal Justice. Plea bargaining is a concept that I feel works well. Plea bargaining was mentioned in week 10 or 11, and I believe it has numerous benefits for the criminal justice system. This was a great course! I thought the discussion boards were useful and informative, offering a wide range of themes and information. Our Professor’s Monday lectures were always quite entertaining and simple to follow, despite the fact that they were long. This semester, it was great to virtually meet everyone! Adrian: 4 Racial profiling is one aspect of the criminal justice system that I dislike. I believe that judging someone solely on the basis of their race is unjust. When Darren Martin, a former White House aide, moved into his new apartment in New York, his new neighbors mistook him for an armed robber. A half-dozen cops arrived at the flat, ready to confront a dangerous armed thief. Darren feared he could have been killed if he had made one incorrect move. When this happens, racial profiling becomes extremely dangerous. The Adversary System is one aspect of the criminal justice system that I enjoy. It uses the notions of due process and equal protection to ensure that all criminal defendants have equal opportunities. I appreciated the course because it taught me how to think outside the box while thinking about the law and real-life issues.
