Below is the write up on the therapeutic approach done initially
Psychotherapy involves the use of mental techniques, specifically when centered on consistent personal relations with adults, to influence behavior change in people and solve issues in the desired way. Its aim is to enhance the mental and well-being of a person in order to reduce or resolve troublesome behaviors, compulsions, thoughts, improve relationships, and social skills, among other problems. This type of therapy is evidence-based in treating patients with mental problems, and others are taken as pseudoscience. The main advantage of psychotherapy is allowing patients to have an inner understanding of anxiety and learn the way of turning negative thoughts into positive and productive outlook. Such a treatment can be done either in a group setting or one basis.
I have selected the modeling and role-modeling theory to guide me in this field. I chose this theory since it promotes the ability of nurses to nurture and care for each patient according to their uniqueness. Respect, trust, awareness, and shared goals characterize the therapeutic relationship created between the nurse and the patient in this case. There are key concepts in this theory that are based on four primary theories that include the psychosocial theory by Erickson, the general adaptation syndrome, the hierarchy of needs theory, and cognitive development theory. The type of care provided in this theory exemplifies the theory-based clinical theory, which is focused on the needs of the patient (Erickson, 2017). Care provided recognizes that the clients have the knowledge and can understand what made them sick and what will make them well. This theory allows patients to identify and establish strengths as well as empower the clients to start the healing process.
Modeling involves steps that nurses can take to find information about patients regarding their internal and external model and acknowledge the worth of such data. Since this theoretical model has identified that each patient is unique personally, the modeling process can be applied to develop an image of every patient in order to comprehend every patient’s experience according to their perspective. On the other hand, patients are nurtured to achieve, sustain, and to promote health as facilitated by the nurse in role-modeling. During my practice experience, I will implement the role and role-modeling through promoting and affirming the strengths of the patients, planning mutual health-directed goals, creating trust, and encourage the orientation of the patient and control. To offer holistic care, nurses should try to view the world through the client’s eyes.
My selected counseling theory is cognitive-behavioral theory. It clearly illustrates how cognition plays a critical role in influencing change in behavior. This theory is the most preferred method by scientists, psychologists, and sociologists in helping clients to understand their personal feelings, thoughts, and how they influence behavior in clinical and community environments. This is because they implement both cognitive and behavioral approaches. It is more effective in cases where clients interpret situations negatively, establish distorted thinking, and gradually adopt negative behaviors that negatively affect their social, mental well-being, and physical emotional.
Recent scientific evidence has proven the CBT theory to be a highly effective psychotherapeutic method when incorporating psychological circumstances into behavior frameworks based on healing in a clinical environment. It puts a lot of emphasis on misleading thoughts, problem-solving, and the client’s present situations according to major assumptions. The assumption can be that abnormalities can arise from faulty cognitions about others, resulting in inaccurate thoughts and distorted thinking, and disorderly emotions and behavior (Creed et al., 2020). These faulty thoughts can be through cognitive deficiencies or inaccurate processing of information. The application of CBT in my practicum experience led to empowered patients who can analyze circumstances differently and better understand how their changing behaviors and feelings can contribute to positive health outcomes. In this counseling, the client is taught how to recognize their distorted thoughts through evaluation hence learn how to separate reality and thoughts. They also know how to monitor and observe their thoughts and feelings.
I expect to experience an exciting practicum with real patient’s situations and interesting learning opportunities. This will help me expand my knowledge in this field and get chances to exercise what I have learned, thereby increasing my competency. I have obtained enough and reliable knowledge from taking histories, assessing patients, making diagnoses, and managing a wide range of mental disorders. That is why I look forward to having an easy task when implementing my classroom knowledge to clinical practice. Apart from incorporating nursing and counseling theories, I anticipate addressing various patients’ needs to promote a healing environment and good health.
My goal is to develop further my facilitative counseling skills such as empathy, concreteness, and self-disclosure and encourage my experimentation with other methods. I would like to develop clinical and competency skills during my practicum experience so that I can effectively serve patients. I aim to encourage the client’s social, emotional, and personal development. This accomplishment will help me get to know myself better and find reliable solutions to my patient’s problems and needs (Wheeler & Schumann, 2018). I can monitor their development, which allows me to offer support according to everyone’s needs and make informed decisions to enhance their ability, skills, and healthily change their environment and themselves.
It is clear that psychotherapy practicum requires expertise in both nursing and counseling theories to effectively handle clients with mental disorders and trauma, among other issues that alter their behaviors. CBT theory and modeling theory are effective approaches that can be used to treat such patients and bring out desired outcomes. Each individual is unique hence have different personal needs and preferences. Therefore, counselors need to address the patient’s needs according to their uniqueness since an approach working well to another patient can fail when used to other patients even when they have the same problem. Therapists and clients need to establish a strong relationship with each other that fosters respect, trust, and shared goals.
