Developing a Logistics Plan for International Goods Transportation and Warehousing
Strategic Logistics Management, Inc. (SLM) is a third-party logistics services provider established in the United States. SLM now administers a number of warehouses in the Los Angeles and New York/New Jersey areas. Air and ocean shipping, customs clearing, forwarding, warehousing, and land transportation are all areas where SLM excels. SLM has developed an effective logistics information system (LIS) that encompasses staff, equipment, and technology during the last five years. A transportation management system (TMS) and a warehouse management system are two decision-support systems incorporated in the LIS (WMS).
In the United States, SLM employs professional personnel to handle a variety of logistical tasks and provide customized logistics solutions and services. The company is considering expanding its global operations to include the following services in Australia:
Imports: Import consolidation, warehousing of goods prior to customs clearance, and management of import documents for customs formalities are all supported by a network of offices and trade links.
Door-to-door services include cargo collection from suppliers and direct delivery of goods to customers, as well as freight bookings with airlines and ocean lines to manage cargo exports from the US and Australia.
Exports: Handling a variety of cargo exports by sea and air, assuring timely delivery of goods at the best possible prices. Export documentation is provided in its whole.
SLM is now negotiating two contracts in Australia that will begin next year. The first order is for two million pounds of stainless steel brushfire mesh to be transported from Greer Wire Company in Melbourne, Australia, to safeguard residences in brushfire-prone areas. This shipment will be delivered to the city of Los Angeles in the state of California. The stainless steel wire mesh comes in five-meter rolls with a diameter of 500 mm and a weight of 50 kg per roll.
The second contract is for storing and shipping of clothing in various sizes of cardboard boxes that easily assemble in one unit load on a 48-inch by 40-inch pallet with Brooks Brothers, a clothing manufacturer based in New York City. The products will be sent to Sydney, Australia, from New York, New York. You can make acceptable assumptions regarding the weight of the boxes for the sake of this assignment.
SLM will control the flow of products into and out of Australia. The proposed warehouses in Australia will be near two major cities: Sydney and Melbourne. SLM expects to handle an average of 200 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of imports and exports between the United States and Australia every month in its first year in Australia.
You work at SLM as a Logistics Manager. The CEO has requested you to build a logistics strategy for the anticipated warehouse operations in Australia and transportation of goods between Australia and the United States as part of the company’s desire to increase its competitiveness in the global marketplace.
In your report, you mention (allowing for reasonable assumptions when necessary),
Choose between the two SLM contracts shown above.
Determine whether the product’s shipment size is small (150 to 500 pounds) or large (consolidated) by examining its physical features, volume, and quantity (at least one TEU).
Evaluate at least two modes of transportation that best support the organization’s supply chain for transporting the product door-to-door in a multimodal shipment from one country to another. Give an explanation for your decision.
Determine the kind of warehouses that SLM should use in Australia to ensure that items are moved quickly. Explain how your solution supports SLM’s supply chain management by recommending either public, private, or contract warehousing.
List and define the commercial, financial, and shipping documentation that are required to comply with US export and import regulations. A commercial invoice, a certificate of origin, a shipper’s export declaration, a shipper’s letter of instruction, a bill of lading, a freight bill, and a letter of credit are examples of these documents.
Determine the relevant Incoterms® 2010 rule based on the shipment mode and the duties of the buyers and sellers.
Choose a method (Lean, Six Sigma, Just-in-Time, or Kanban) and describe how it may be used to ensure that effective and efficient warehouse operations procedures support the company’s supply chain strategy.
In the table below, list at least four more budget line items with justifications to support smooth warehouse operations in Australia. Include multiple logistical activity indicators, cost drivers, profit models, and the role of inventory in SLM’s financial performance to support your rationale.
Line item in the budget
Management of cost savings
Security and safety at the warehouse
Warehouse operations that are both efficient and safe
Implementation of software
For a truck trailer, order management, client relationship management, and load planning are all important.
