What are your most important takeaways from the program?
The most important takeaway from the program that I got out of it were the networking opportunities. It was interesting to see other students in similar fields or meeting other students that live in the same state/city as you. Being able to discuss the struggles of being a working adult, parent, and student with someone else was helpful. Finding students that were also top executives and/or business owners was refreshing because I could network with others going through similar obstacles within their business. This gave me multiple perspectives on how to tackle things I was going through within my own business.
What practices have you been able to apply in your job?
I would say that the practice that I’ve been able to apply to my company is implementing more structure and changing the way I manage my team to increase productivity and efficiency.
How have these practices impacted your ability to lead?
These practices have made me a better manager. I’ve been able to do a better job measuring productivity within the team but also recognizing strengths and weaknesses within my team as well. These practices have allowed me to analyze company structure, development, and productivity to determine what needed to be amended.
What have been your most significant areas of growth?
Due to being able to analyze my team better, I’ve been able to see the gaps in my company. I’ve added four additional team members to my team and promoted three.
Tell us about any promotions you have received or changes in jobs, responsibilities, etc.
Since I own my own company, there aren’t many promotions that can be given to me. However, I did add a business partner to my company who oversees the day-to-day operations. I’ve been able to add additional services to add value to my clients.
What advice would you give to an incoming JWMI student?
Read the fine print and make sure you understand the program you are signing up for. This MBA is not a traditional MBA and once you start you won’t be able to transfer to another MBA “traditional” program.
Understand the time commitment and financial investment you are signing up for
Don’t start a business, go through a divorce, and move cities with your children while going through or starting your MBA program.
Time management is going to be imperative to your success.

Communication is key in all areas of life and that’s certainly true in the workplace. Mastering effective communication skills and the art of persuasion will benefit you for the rest of your life, as it will help you influence more people and persuade customers and/or clients to use your products or services. Knowing your audience, building credibility, using positive body language, and focusing on the benefits are a few ways you can master the art of communication and persuasion in the business world.
