Term Paper Detailed Guidelines
Overview: Throughout the quarter you will gather information about a specific extinct species. After conducting a literature review of the published scientific articles about this species, you will write a term paper including pictures and graphs.
Topic: Choice of Dunkleosteus.
Required Sections: Your paper should have three distinct and labeled sections:
- Species overview – the name of the species, a general overview of its size, palaeobiological details and a phylogenetic tree (Links to an external site.)showing its relationship to other species. If available, include an artist rendering of what the species likely looked like as well as a reconstructed full fossil representation.
- Fossil Finds – Discuss the first significant fossil find and naming of this species. Discuss at least two primary resource papers and display and explain the graphs and pictures from the research.
- Species significance – Explain why this species is significant (scientifically, not to you personally) and how research about this species has increased our understanding of geologic history.
Graph Requirement: Your paper should contain at least 2 graphs, although more graphs may be better. These graphs should be from primary research articles; you should explain what the graph is illustrating and why it is important.
Reference List: You should use multiple sources for this project, both primary and secondary. Keep track of all your sources and create a Reference List in CSE format. Do not use Wikipedia or any encyclopedia for a source.
Citations: Use a numbering system (CSE) for citations within your paper. No more than 25% of the paper should be direct quotations from source material, however the majority of the paper should have citations after each sentence. The idea is to use your sources to help you craft your own sentences. Most sentences should require a citation at the end of the sentence since you will be using information from source material. However, I do not want large chunks of direct quotes. Also, please assume I will check your paper for plagiarism and will read the Wikipedia page of your species.
Writing Style: Use a scientific writing style, which means there should be nothing personal about you or related to you in the paper. All facts and statistics should be cited using CSE system. Your audience for this paper is other amateur paleontologists and you should use appropriate language; you can assume your audience understands general paleontological terms. Hopefully it goes without saying that you need to understand the words you are using.
How long does it need to be? How many sources do I need? What do I need to do to earn an A+? It is by committing yourself to a particular species, doing the hard work of researching and reading primary research articles, properly citing and listing your source material, writing and editing diligently and then taking your time with layout, graphs and pictures. Word count is unimportant to me; take the number of words you need to answer properly the 3 required sections. Having said that, here is my very rough estimate for each section:
- Species Overview: 1/2 page of text and 2+ pages with pictures of phylogenetic tree, artist rendering and reconstructed full fossil representation.
- Fossil Finds: ~2 pages of text and 2+ pages of graphs and photos from primary source articles. Explanation of graphs required.
- Species Significance: ~1 page of text. ~1+ page(s) Photos, graphs and diagrams from primary and/or secondary articles that highlight the significant aspects.
You can use the font type of your choice. Please pick a style and size that is easy to read.
