Because there were no videos or newspapers in the ancient world, people communicated by listening to traveling storytellers known as Rhapsodes and going to the theater. Tragic and comedic theater were both a part of Athenian religious ritual, so plays were written for the many festivals held throughout the year. The best plays were given prizes. Aristophanes’ comedies were voted among the best, if not the best, of all time.
Many excerpts from his play “The Clouds” are included in this week’s reading. It’s a hilarious play in which Socrates is depicted as a crazed professor who hangs from the ceiling in a basket, thinking big thoughts. It is, however, a play with a message, and that message is a strong criticism of the Sophists (including Socrates) and Aristophanes’ view of what they were doing to Athenian society, as the chapter explains.
Everyone in Athens and the surrounding city-states went to see this and other plays in theaters. It was a means of assisting citizens in coming to terms with what was happening to their city and culture. In The Clouds, Aristophanes depicts the harm relativism was causing and had caused to the great civilization they had once been a part of, which was now fading away.
Give a summary of the play’s plot for this assignment. Then provide a summary of all of Aristophanes’ major points. Allow the text’s author to assist you with this. (You may paraphrase the text’s author, but any paraphrasing must be accompanied by a citation.)
Finally, pay attention to the opening monologue of any late-night talk show. Give a concrete example of what has been said. Compare and contrast what you hear with Aristophanes’ remarks. Give specific examples. Do you believe that using humor to expose hypocrisy and folly and ridicule those who engage in it is an effective way to teach us not to take such people seriously? Is it possible to reclaim our culture in this manner?

It’s difficult for us to believe that some people lived up to their ideals today, but Pericles’ description of Athens in his Funeral Oration was true to Athenian principles. Historians agree that the Athenians lived and spoke in accordance with their beliefs. They embodied the Classical Homeric Ideal of life.
In one paragraph, summarize the key concepts in the Oration and your thoughts on those ideals for this discussion. Then compare and contrast Pericles and Callicles.
