Global warming is robbing the ecosystem of some natural resources as the world’s population approaches 10 billion by 2050. Developing countries will confront increasing challenges in enhancing the livelihoods of their populations and stabilizing their access to enough food as their population declines. The reason these governments are still struggling is that our climate has an impact on their economic health and, as a result, on their people’s living standards. Climate change is to blame for the current loss of biodiversity and physical access to some of the world’s most important farming regions. As a result, changes in global weather patterns have a negative impact on agricultural output and food distribution to local and international markets. As the Earth’s climate changes for the worse, these problems will become much more severe for these countries. Temperatures are already rising slowly, and polar ice caps are melting, so the big question is what this means for developing countries.
The developing world’s problem isn’t a shortage of food; rather, it’s a lack of access to food. Simply put, climate change has an impact on the global food chain and, as a result, on the living conditions of entire people. To make matters worse, food isn’t getting to where it’s needed in time to avoid famine or starvation. In many developing countries, food shortages are caused by governments’ control over distribution networks, not by a lack of food. By favoring particular ethnic or religious groups over others, these governments are effectively weaponizing food. When you add in the fact that we are currently witnessing catastrophic climate change, the future for billions of poor people appears increasingly bleak.
You must prepare a compelling paper for the United Nations that tackles the following questions about the relationship between atmospheric weather patterns and food security in underdeveloped countries:
Although the terms “climate change” and “global warming” are frequently used interchangeably, they are not the same thing. What are the distinctions between the two notions, and what causes the confusion?
The average worldwide temperature in 1900 was around 13.7 degrees Celsius (56.7 degrees Fahrenheit) (Osborn, 2021), but by 2020, it had climbed by 1.2 degrees Celsius to 14.9 degrees Celsius (58.9 degrees Fahrenheit). According to Earth and climate scientists, if the Earth’s surface temperature rises another 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit), we will experience catastrophic weather patterns that will, among other things, raise sea levels, cause widespread droughts and wildfires, result in plant, insect, and animal extinctions, and reduce agricultural productivity around the world (Mastroianni, 2015 and Lindsey & Dahlman, 2020). What level of trust do you place in these forecasts? Why?
Changes in weather patterns do represent a threat to the Earth’s food supply, but what specific concerns does climate change offer to the food security of people in developing countries?
Some transnational lending agencies, such as the International Monetary Fund, UNICEF, and AID, are actively debating whether financial assistance for food security has been exploited by recipient government officials. On the other side, US authorities claim that there is no misuse of their help because they have strong monitoring in place. What are your thoughts on the subject? Is there proof that government officials are abusing financial assistance to poor countries?
