What are some of the current issues in early childhood education settings (of any kind) that make play-based learning difficult to introduce or maintain? Or perhaps what would make it difficult to increase the amount of play-based learning? Physical surroundings, teacher/staff preparedness, parental wishes,
educational trends, policies, or current events (such as COVID-19 or social injustice) are all potential hurdles. That was a collection of thoughts to get you thinking; you don’t have to speak to all of them; you could simply focus on one or two.

The high stakes tests that are demanded of our children are one of the issues that early childhood education is experiencing that affects play-based learning. Children can no longer be educated and shaped to be ready to take tests as early as kindergarten. This is the current difficulty I’m facing; I work in a school
that serves children who have experienced serious trauma. They come to my VPK with no communication skills, cognition, or social and emotional development beyond that of a two-year-old. That is why, this year, I made the decision to leave VPK and teach in a three-year-old classroom, where the demand on
youngsters entering kindergarten, regardless of their impairment, is greater. I honestly believe that the strain placed on teachers produces significant stress, and how can we teach successfully in these circumstances? As a three-year-old teacher, I am less stressed because I am aware that I am not under the VPK
threat of someone entering my classroom and inquiring why the child is failing the VPK exams. In the three-year-old classroom, I can be present and love my pupils while scaffolding their learning through play basis.
-I believe that one of the issues hurting play-based learning is all of the testing and assessments that take place in classrooms. Teachers spend so much time designing lesson plans for students to acquire skills that the fun and playfulness of the learning process is frequently lost. Teachers are so focused on making sure children are on track for their age group’s developmental milestones that activities are becoming more like drills than enjoyable activities that foster learning. Teachers are also more overburdened as a result of having to complete so many tests throughout the year, and they are less creative and
spontaneous with engaging activities for them to learn. I also believe that classroom conduct issues might make it difficult for the classroom atmosphere to be regarded enjoyable for both students and teachers. Children with behavior problems are frequently given more time and attention, while those who are
not causing problems receive less time and attention. Those children are frequently left to fend for themselves and simply play without any guidance or attainable goals. This can be difficult because children are frequently left without a clear purpose or strategy during their playtime, resulting in less play-based learning during the day or at child care centers.
