In this course, we’ll look at how sociologists collect and evaluate data on a wide range of issues using a variety of methodologies. You will each create a research report based on your own empirical data analysis. You have the option of composing a:
a.) QUANTITATIVE PAPER based on existing General Social Survey data (GSS).

QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH GUIDELINES (GSS Data)
Outline the following material to present your paper topic to your reader:
a.) What is the subject of your paper?
b.) What research question(s) do you have? (Example: What is the relationship between…)
a variable X and a variable Y? or Does X change as a result of Y?)
b.) For each of your research questions, what are your hypotheses? There should be three of them
one for each variable that is independent
d.) Why is it important to research this topic?
After you’ve finished your “Results and Discussion” section, it’s usually easier to write an introduction.
This section gives you some background on your dataset. You should talk about the following topics:
a.) Describe your data, the General Social Survey (GSS), in a few words (include the unit of analysis, the time dimension, and the sample).
b.) Identify your dependent and independent variables, as well as the reasons for choosing each of them. What role do these variables play in your topic’s operationalization?
c.) Give a description of each variable, including the variable name, the exact language of the survey question, the variable properties, and the measurement level (i.e. nominal, ordinal, etc.).
d.) Describe the variables’ limitations (e.g. small sample size, limited attributes).
e.) Explain how you went about conducting your research (e.g., cross-tabulation bivariate analysis).
f.) If applicable, provide an explanation for why you are collapsing the variable characteristics.

Discussion of the Findings
This is the area of your article where you clarify your topic and provide evidence to answer your research questions.
Include at least three cross-tabulations with the same dependent variable and three different independent variables. Make care to include the following in each cross-tabulation:
a.) Include a squeaky-clean table (not the GSS-website table). Tables must fit on the page, be readable, logical, and adhere to formatting guidelines. Refer to the lecture notes and Chapter 14 of Babbie’s book.
b.) Identify which of your own research questions the table aids in answering, as well as whether or not your hypothesis was true.
c.) Analyze the data in the table. As though the reader doesn’t have access to the table, you must describe the trends in it. Recognize both similarities and contrasts (small differences in percentages should be interpreted as similarities and not as differences). You don’t have enough data to generalize about that group if table cells have fewer than 30 responses, and you should say this in your analysis.
Conclusion and Consequences
In this final phase, you close the paper by accomplishing the following:
a. State your research question once more.
b.) Summarize the findings in relation to your research topic. To put it another way, consider how everything fits together.
Your research question is informed by three cross-tabulations.
