Molly is 16 years old and studying for her GCSEs; she is anxious all of the time and studies for several hours after school every evening and all day on weekends. She’s just lost a lot of weight and told her mother that she thinks she’s “fatter” than her pals, which makes her feel insecure and self-conscious. Her mother had symptoms similar to those observed in anorexia when she was a teenager and has always been very health-conscious in terms of her food and exercise routine, despite never being diagnosed. Molly is currently eating very little, limiting her daily calorie intake to fewer than 700. Molly’s doctor has finally established that she has anorexia nervosa and has recommended antidepressants or psychotherapy as treatments.
1. What signs and symptoms will Molly show if she has anorexia nervosa?

SSRIs’ effectiveness as antidepressants
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are drugs that block the reuptake of serotonin in the brain (SSRIs)
Serotonin is generally reabsorbed by nerve cells after carrying a message – reuptake.
SSRIs function by blocking reuptake, allowing more serotonin to be accessible to send instructions to other nerve cells.
The resulting increase in serotonin levels could aid in improving mood and allowing patients to engage in/respond to other treatments, such as CBT.
It could take many weeks to see a difference.
