I started this class unsure of the Business Analyst roles and responsibilities as the companies I have worked for since graduation never had this job title. For example, let’s say Starbucks wants to reduce the wait time for a customer to receive their order in-store. Considering the four common responsibilities noted:
- Conducting research for existing business systems- analysis process needed to determine the current state. Does Starbucks have a delay in delivering orders due to technology issues at the cashier level or at the drink/food delivery level? Which of the 3-level scheme is involved in the existing business system?
- Identification of improvement opportunities- analysis process needed for assessing as-is processes versus possible improvements. What is the urgency for the change to take place? What is needed to create and communicate the vision?
- Documentation of business requirements- analysis process not needed as internal contacts at Starbucks would manage this documentation process.
- Facilitation of final project deliverables acceptance- analysis process needed for change management. Does the change level affect the individual or personal level, group or team level, and/or organization or enterprise level? How well does the change level absorb the change in process during implementation? Is is possible to combine the improvements to create more change or improvements?
For other project examples, the analysis process may take place throughout all project management development cycles. The possibilities and limits vary greatly per industry, expectations, and budget/timeline limitations.
